37 Provisional Parties and Counting: Who's Registering Before 2027, and Why
Kenya has a lot of political parties and is acquiring more.
During 2026 the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties granted provisional registration to a series of new outfits. In July 2026 alone, eight certificates went out: the Alliance for Democratic Association (ADA), People Salvation Party of Kenya (PSP-K), Neema Congress Party (NCP), One Nation Movement (ONM), Shikana Frontliners for Unity Party (SFUP), National Forum Party (NFP), People Prosperity Party (PPP) and National Integration Party (NIP).
Earlier in the year the Registrar had registered The Future Party (TFP), Kenya Great Party (KGP) and United Super Alliance Party (USAP), among others including Clean Alliance Party of Kenya (CAP-K), Chama cha Undugu na Demokrasia (CUD) and New Face Party of Kenya (FACE). The provisional list rose past 37.
Registrar John Lorionokou presented the July certificates at the ORPP headquarters, noting the parties had met the legal requirements for provisional registration under the Political Parties Act.
And the ones that could not get through
In January 2026 it was reported that a funding crisis at the Registrar's office had frozen the registration of 32 new political parties. The ORPP has separately gone before a parliamentary committee to argue for a larger budget allocation.
So the picture is not simply "everyone is registering". It is that the queue is long, the office is under-resourced, and whether your party makes it through depends partly on things that have nothing to do with your party.
Why so many, when most will not win a seat?
Four honest reasons.
A party is a nomination route. If you cannot get a ticket in an established party — because of incumbents, zoning, or a National Elections Board that has other plans — registering a party is an alternative to going independent, and it keeps you eligible for down-ballot pull that independents do not have.
A party is a negotiating asset. A registered party with a symbol and modest support is something a coalition can buy. Kenyan politics trades these openly.
A movement needs a vehicle. Movements cannot put candidates on ballots. GeorGeorge Natembeyaawe has reportedly attempted registration some fifty times without success, and EdwiEdwin Sifuna spoken publicly about the fight to register Linda Mwananchi. Both illustrate the problem.
Provisional registration is cheap relative to the option value. Full registration is harder, but a provisional certificate keeps a door open.
The deadlines that will thin the list
Provisional registration is not enough to nominate anyone. To field candidates in 2027 a party must, at minimum:
| By | Requirement |
|---|---|
| 15 Oct 2026 | File authorised officials and specimen signatures with the IEBC |
| 30 Oct 2026 | Have nomination rules certified by the Registrar |
| 6 Nov 2026 | Submit certified rules to the IEBC |
| 16–23 Mar 2027 | Submit and certify the membership list |
| 12 Apr 2027 | Deliver the certified membership list to the IEBC |
Most of the 37 will not clear all five. Watch the October dates: a party that has not certified nomination rules by 30 October 2026 is, for practical purposes, not going to nominate anybody in 2027.
The question to ask before you join one
If somebody invites you to be a new party's candidate, ask exactly one thing first: show me the certificate and tell me the date your nomination rules will be certified.
An answer that is confident but not specific is the answer. Plenty of aspirants have paid nomination fees to parties that could not, in the end, put them on a ballot — and by the time that becomes clear, the 8 May independent deadline has passed too.
Build your ward structure regardless. It is the one asset that does not depend on whether the Registrar gets to your file.
Frequently Asked Questions
