Edwin Sifuna After ODM: Linda Mwananchi and the Fastest-Rising Name in Kenyan Politics
Of every number to come out of Kenyan polling in 2026, the one that should interest campaign strategists most is not the leader's. It is Edwin Sifuna's trajectory: from essentially no measurable national support in 2025 to double figures in successive 2026 readings.
Infotrak's mid-2026 poll put him at 12 per cent, level with Fred Matiang'i and just behind Kalonzo Musyoka. TIFA described him as the fastest-rising figure in the opposition field.
He got there while losing an internal party fight.
What happened at ODM
Sifuna was removed as ODM's Secretary-General. The party's National Executive Committee resolved on it at a meeting in Mombasa in February 2026; the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal briefly barred execution of the resolution; the removal ultimately went through and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties struck him from ODM's leadership list. Catherine Omanyo took over in an acting capacity.
The charges the party set out were procedural on their face: publicly declaring on television in July 2025 that the ODM–UDA memorandum was "dead", and missing Central Committee and NEC meetings in January, February and March 2026.
Underneath that was a straightforward disagreement about direction. ODM after Raila Odinga's death in October 2025 moved toward accommodation with the government. Sifuna did not.
What Linda Mwananchi is
Linda Mwananchi — roughly, "safeguarding the citizen" — is the movement Sifuna now fronts. It is not a registered party. It is a mobilisation platform, organised around cost of living, governance and accountability, and it has spent 2026 doing rallies.
The route matters. It began in Western Kenya — Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia — before moving into Nyanza with a Homa Bay rally on 16 August 2026 that drew large crowds and significant disruption. Siaya Governor James OrenJames Orengoasi East MP Babu OwinoBabu Owinohe platform. A Meru rally was announced for the end of August.
Going into Homa Bay is the interesting choice. That is ODM's heartland. A former ODM Secretary-General holding a rally there, against the party's current direction, is a direct test of whether the ODM base follows the party or the politics.
Why the rise is happening
Three things, none of them mysterious.
He occupies an empty position. The opposition's other principals are all long-established figures with long records. Sifuna is younger, and he is the one who publicly refused the accommodation with government. In a field where that is the live question, being the person who said no is a position nobody else can take.
Western Kenya has a vacancy. Kenyan reporting has been direct about this: Sifuna's rise threatens Musalia MuMusalia Mudavadi Wetang'ula more than it threatens Ruto, because it competes for the same region. He and George NatGeorge Natembeya described as building an alliance to consolidate Western behind one vehicle.
The movement is doing physical work. Rallies in eight counties in a year is not a media strategy, it is a ground operation.
The problem Linda Mwananchi has to solve
A movement is not a ballot line.
To put candidates on paper in 2027 you need a registered party with certified nomination rules by 30 October 2026 and a certified membership list by March 2027. A movement that is still a movement in November 2026 has run out of road for 2027.
Sifuna has spoken publicly about the fight to register Linda Mwananchi. Registration is not automatic — the Registrar granted provisional registration to a handful of new parties in 2026 while a funding crisis froze dozens of other applications.
So the question for anyone thinking of running under this banner is simple and unsentimental: what symbol will be on the paper, and will it be registered in time? Until that is answered, an aspirant's safest position is to build a ward operation that belongs to them rather than to any party — coordinators, volunteers and polling agents they recruited themselves and can move to whatever symbol exists in April.
