Rigathi Gachagua and DCP: 47 Counties, One MP, and the Gap Between Them
In July 2026 the Democracy for Citizens Party won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election. Its candidate, Sammy Kamau, took 35,440 votes against 5,450 for the UDA candidate.
That is not a narrow win. In Nyandarua, in a by-election, against the party of government, a party barely a year old won by better than six to one.
It was also DCP's first elected MP.
What DCP says it will do
Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President, has been explicit about the scale of the plan: DCP will contest the presidency and field candidates for all 47 governorships, all 47 Senate seats, all 290 constituencies and every ward in the country.
He has also struck an arrangement with Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper Patriotic Front under which DCP takes the Nairobi governor, senator and woman representative slots.
What that plan actually requires
Set aside the politics for a moment and look at the operations, because this is where a claim like "every ward" gets tested.
Kenya has roughly 1,450 wards, 290 constituencies and 47 counties. Add the Senate and woman representative races and the party is talking about something in the order of 1,880 candidates.
Each of those candidates needs:
- to be a member of the party, on a certified list, by March 2027;
- to survive a primary the party must hold and conclude by 8 May 2027;
- to be nominated with a valid signature from an official the party filed with the IEBC by 15 October 2026.
And each of them, to compete rather than just appear, needs polling agents. Kenya has around 55,000 polling stations for 2027 by IEBC's own kit numbers. A party seriously contesting everywhere needs agents in most of them.
That is not a slogan problem. It is a recruitment, training and payment problem at national scale, and it is the reason parties that promise everywhere usually deliver somewhere.
The Political Parties Fund problem
The Registrar gazetted the 2026/27 Political Parties Fund allocations on 21 August 2026: Sh1.4 billion across 48 parties. UDA took Sh549.97 million, ODM Sh293.78 million, Jubilee about Sh128.9 million.
DCP received nothing.
That is not a snub, it is the formula. Seventy per cent of the fund is distributed on votes won at the previous election, and DCP did not exist in 2022. Every new party faces the same wall, which is one reason Kenyan politics keeps recycling old vehicles rather than building new ones. We wrote about that pattern in why Kenyan parties die.
So DCP is attempting a national ground operation on donations and momentum, against parties receiving state money quarterly.
Where DCP is genuinely strong
Mount Kenya, and it is not close. Ol Kalou's margin is the clearest available evidence, and Gachagua has spent 2026 on continuous grassroots tours — Murang'a in August, Narok, and a steady flow of elected leaders defecting from other parties, including at least one ODM-elected MCA.
Where the plan is untested
Everywhere else. A party can be dominant in one region and still need 47-county coverage to make a presidential ticket work, because of the 25-per-cent-in-half-the-counties rule.
That is the honest read: DCP has a regional base that is real and a national claim that is, so far, a claim.
The lesson for a DCP aspirant
If you are seeking a DCP ticket in a ward outside Mount Kenya, the party brand will not carry you. Your structure will. Named coordinators in every part of your ward, a volunteer roster with completed tasks against it, and an agent named for every polling stream is what turns a new party's candidate into a competitive one.
That is exactly the gap BallotWinners was built for: a ward campaign on a cheap Android phone can run the same agent, volunteer, spending and results tools a national campaign gets. The party's fund allocation is not something you control. Your coverage is.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is DCP in Kenyan politics?
DCP is the Democracy for Citizens Party, founded and led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. It plans to contest the presidency and field candidates for every governorship, Senate seat, constituency and ward in the 2027 General Election.
Has DCP won any seats?
Yes. DCP's Sammy Kamau won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election in July 2026 with 35,440 votes against 5,450 for the UDA candidate, giving the party its first elected MP.
Why did DCP get nothing from the Political Parties Fund?
Seventy per cent of the fund is allocated on votes won at the previous general election. DCP did not exist in 2022, so it has no qualifying vote share, which is a structural barrier every new Kenyan party faces.
