The Ukombozi People's Party Dispute: A Timeline
The Ukombozi People's Party dispute is a fight over one Swahili word, "ukombozi", which means liberation. Three groups wanted it. Kalonzo Musyoka's coalition reserved "The Ukombozi Alliance" on 20 July 2026. UDP, pushed by George Natembeya (Governor, Trans Nzoia) as a vehicle for Edwin Sifuna (Senator, Nairobi), was refused the name "Ukombozi People's Party" in a letter dated 8 September 2026. And Allan Akivaga says his own Ukombozi People's Party reserved the name in March 2025. This timeline runs to 23 September 2026.
Before 2026
- 12 March 2022: the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition forms. It renames itself in 2026 (see below).
- 13 March 2025: the name "Ukombozi People's Party" is reserved for Allan Akivaga for a 90-day window, The Star reported.
June to August 2026
- 4 June: Sifuna's allies apply to reserve "Linda Mwananchi Movement". The Registrar rejects it on 11 June, agrees to reserve it on 4 August and reverses that on 7 August, the Nation reported. Losing that first name shaped much of what came after.
- 20 July: "The Ukombozi Alliance" is reserved by an applicant other than UDP. Eugene Wamalwa of DAP-K later said: "We made the request to reserve The Ukombozi Alliance, way before the plan to rebrand Jirongo's party to Ukombozi People's Party."
- 10 August: The Star and the Nation date correspondence on UDP's proposed change of name to this day. The Nation described a law firm's objection to it.
- 25 August: the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal lets Sifuna's side reserve "The Mwananchi Party" while the Linda dispute continues. "We are fighting for a brand, our name," Sifuna says.
- 26 August: The Star reports that the Ukombozi People's Party, a rebrand of the late Cyrus Jirongo's United Democratic Party (UDP), may be Sifuna's new home.
September 2026
- 8 September: Registrar John Cox Lorionokou writes that his office "has not approved or authorised the use of the name 'Ukombozi People's Party (UPP)' by the United Democratic Party (UDP)". He cites section 8(c) of the Political Parties Act and the resemblance to The Ukombozi Alliance.
- 14 September: the tribunal hears the Linda name dispute and fixes 30 September for its decision.
- 17 September: the Nation reports that Natembeya backs the Ukombozi People's Party, with a launch set for 1 October, while Babu Owino (Embakasi East) wants Sifuna on The Mwananchi Party.
- 18 September: at a burial in Nyakach, Owino proposes that Sifuna lead the Ukombozi People's Party and that he lead The Mwananchi Party.
- 21 September: Kalonzo announces that the coalition formerly called Azimio la Umoja has renamed itself The Ukombozi Alliance, with the slogan "One Term, One Team, One Coalition".
- 21 and 22 September: the Registrar's 8 September letter becomes public. Akivaga asks the Registrar to revoke the Ukombozi Alliance name, Citizen Digital reported. Godfrey Osotsi (Senator, Vihiga) says Sifuna's party would be announced within two weeks, and Wilberforce Oundo (Funyula) says Sifuna has not settled on the Ukombozi party.
- 23 September: The Star reports that Kalonzo's camp wants him named joint opposition candidate by 10 October, with Sifuna as running mate. Caleb Amisi (Saboti) tells the paper that someone "has now run away with Ukombozi/ Linda Mwananchi parties."
Dates that were scheduled when we wrote this
These were the plans as reported by 23 September 2026. Later reporting will show what actually happened.
- 30 September: the tribunal's Linda decision.
- 1 October: the Ukombozi People's Party launch, put in doubt by the Registrar's letter.
- Around 3 October: the unveiling of Sifuna's party, promised by his allies.
- 15 October: the IEBC deadline for parties to lodge authorised officials and specimen signatures.
- 16 October: the deadline for nomination rules at the Registrar.
Reading the timeline
Everything turns on 20 July. Each later argument, from Wamalwa's to the Registrar's, rests on The Ukombozi Alliance having been reserved first.
The letter's timing is the other oddity. It was dated 8 September but stayed out of public view for about two weeks, surfacing only after Kalonzo had used the name. Nobody has explained why it was not published earlier.
The legal reasoning is in why the Registrar blocked the name, and the political fight in Sifuna and Kalonzo's fight over one word. For the coalition that holds the name, see the Ukombozi Alliance explained; for the routes Sifuna had left, his options after the setback.
