What an MCA Aspirant Should Have Done by October 2026

Updated 2 October 2026.

By October 2026 an MCA aspirant should be a paid-up member of the party whose ticket they want, hold a list of every polling station in the ward with its registered voters, have a written budget, and have recruited three to five people who will still be working in May 2027. MCA nominations at the IEBC are scheduled for 2 to 11 June 2027, after party primaries end in early May.

Membership, on the party's register

The IEBC's 20 August press release gave 16 March 2027 for membership lists; the gazette notices set 23 March for the Registrar to certify them and 12 April for parties to hand them to the IEBC. If your name is not on your party's register, you cannot contest its primary. The card in your wallet is not the register, so check that the Registrar of Political Parties has you recorded correctly. If you plan to run as an independent, you must have left your party by about 8 May 2027.

Read your party's nomination rules as soon as they are certified. The Registrar set 30 October 2026 as the date for certifying them. Some parties have already published fees. The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) set Sh5,000 for MCA aspirants, or Sh2,500 for youth and persons with disability, in a notice of 24 July 2026, The Star reported. See why you read the rules before paying.

The ward, station by station

The IEBC ruled out boundary changes before 2027, so the ward you are running in is the 2012 ward. Get hold of:

  • every polling centre and station in the ward, with registered voters for each;
  • the 2022 MCA result by station, if you can obtain the Forms 36A;
  • where new registrations since 2025 have clustered.

With that list you can rank the stations by how many votes you might realistically pick up at each. Our guide to working at polling station level explains why the whole ward is too big a target.

A budget on paper

Write down what you expect to spend, month by month, up to August 2027: fees, transport, printing, agent costs on polling day, and your own time off work. The campaign-finance regulations gazetted on 7 August 2026 apply to MCA races too, including the limit that no single source can give more than 20 per cent of allowed contributions. Our comparison of two real MCA budgets shows how far apart they can be.

Be careful with handouts. Under the Election Offences Act, money given to voters is bribery, whatever name it goes by at the meeting.

A small team that stays

A ward campaign runs on a handful of people. One of them keeps the contact list, one is trusted with money, and for each large village or estate you want somebody who knows it well. Ask them now, agree what each will do and meet once a month.

Whoever is still turning up in the quiet months of early 2027 is your best pool of polling agents.

Something to show for the ward

Voters increasingly ask what an aspirant has already done for the ward. Attend county budget public participation forums, which counties are required by law to hold, and speak on ward projects. It is legitimate civic work and gives you something concrete to point to later. Our explainer on what an MCA does is a useful script for those conversations.

The early-campaign rules

IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon said on 20 August 2026 that campaigning before 29 May 2027 is prohibited, including posters, caravans and campaigning in places of worship or at burials. The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 would define early campaigning in law; we had not seen a report of its passage by 23 September 2026. You can still meet people, sign up members and speak at public forums. Posters are among the things Ethekon named, so keep yours in storage until 2 June, when the gazette opens the MCA campaign period.

No degree needed

You do not need a degree to run for MCA in 2027. Section 22(1)(b)(ii) of the Elections Act once asked MCA candidates for one, but the High Court declared it void on 15 October 2021, in County Assembly Forum v Attorney General. You still need to be a registered voter in Kenya and meet the Constitution's other qualifications.
