Halfway Through 2026: Where the 2027 Race Actually Stands

Six months of 2026 are gone. The election is thirteen months away. Here is an honest mid-point assessment.

What is settled

The date. Tuesday, 10 August 2027. The IEBC has confirmed it and has not moved.

The incumbent is running, on UDA, with a broad-based arrangement that now includes ODM.

The boundaries. There will be no comprehensive delimitation before 2027. The country will vote on lines drawn in 2012.

The scale. The IEBC has a record budget of around Sh74 billion, is procuring a substantially new fleet of KIEMS kits, and is targeting a register of 28.5 million voters.

What is not settled

Who the opposition candidate is. The united opposition said it would name one in the first quarter of 2026. It did not. This remains the single largest open question in Kenyan politics.

Whether ODM is in government or in opposition. The pact with UDA has moved toward formalisation while parts of the party's base and leadership reject it, and a former Secretary-General has been removed over the disagreement.

Whether the newer movements will have a symbol. Regional and national movements with real support remain, in several cases, without a registered party.

Whether the election will be peaceful. The by-elections have been marked by violence and human rights bodies have warned about a pattern of political intolerance and the use of organised groups.

What has to happen in the next six months

This is the part campaigns should be reading as a checklist.

By What
Aug–Sep 2026 Parties draft the nomination rules that will govern every 2027 primary
15 Oct 2026 Parties file authorised officials and specimen signatures with the IEBC
30 Oct 2026 The Registrar certifies nomination rules
6 Nov 2026 Certified rules reach the IEBC
Throughout Continuous Voter Registration, which is where the 2027 electorate is being built

Everything on that list happens inside party offices and government departments, with almost no public attention, and it determines who is allowed to be a candidate.

What a campaign should have done by 31 December

Four things. None requires a large budget and all of them take months.

A named coordinator in every ward you intend to contest. Not a name on a list — a person who has been given a task and completed it.

A membership recruitment operation, because the certified list closes in March 2027 and only members vote in a direct primary.

The beginning of agent recruitment, ward by ward, against a list of every polling stream in your area.

A written answer from your party to three questions: what nomination method applies to my seat, is my seat zoned, and what is the internal filing deadline.

The uncomfortable summary

Most Kenyan campaigns will do none of that until March 2027, and will then compete for the same coordinators, the same agents and the same volunteers as everybody else, at the moment those people are most expensive and least available.

The campaigns that win close seats in August 2027 are being built now, in the quiet part of the cycle, by people doing unglamorous work nobody is reporting.

The three things that could still change everything

The opposition names a candidate. Every poll published after that is a different poll, and the presidential arithmetic changes immediately.

The UDA–ODM arrangement formalises or collapses. A formal pre-election coalition with an agreed running mate is a very different proposition from a working understanding, and both sides have incentives pointing in both directions.

Something happens that nobody has modelled. Kenyan election cycles have been reshaped by court rulings, deaths, defections and street mobilisation, frequently at short notice.

That last one is not a cop-out. It is the argument for building an operation rather than a strategy: a campaign with named coordinators, an active volunteer roster and agent coverage is robust to a change in the national picture. One built entirely around a coalition position is not.
