How to Win a Ward When Your Presidential Candidate Is Unpopular There

If your presidential candidate is unpopular in the ward, make the MCA race about the ward and show voters a record they can check. Recruit local people they respect, and remind them that the MCA ballot is a separate ballot. Do not attack your own presidential candidate, and do not try to hide your party, because the symbol is on the paper. Kenyan voters split their six votes more often than party managers admit.

How unpopular is "unpopular"?

Measure before you panic. National mood figures in 2026 were stark. TIFA reported on 9 September 2026 that 76 per cent of respondents said the country was heading in the wrong direction, from fieldwork of 2,048 adults between 13 and 22 June 2026. The figure was 90 per cent in Mt Kenya and 89 per cent in Nairobi.

None of that is your ward's vote for MCA. In the Ol Kalou by-election on 16 July 2026 the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate won 5,450 votes against 35,440 for the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). That was a parliamentary seat, and a popular local UDA aspirant in one of Ol Kalou's wards would at least start with that floor under them.

Voters know the ballots are separate

Each Kenyan voter gets six ballot papers, and they can and do choose different parties on each. Our explainer on voting for six different parties sets out why that is normal. The aim is to turn the MCA ballot into a decision about you.

Run on what an MCA can touch

Ward races turn on the things an MCA can influence: ward development funds, the county budget allocation to the ward, a dispensary, a market shed, bursaries. Know the numbers and go to the budget hearings. Our guide to ward development funds is a starting list.

When a voter brings up the presidential candidate, answer honestly: "I am running to represent this ward in the county assembly, and here is what I will do about the road." Then talk about the road.

Keep your distance, but do not disown the top

Disowning the top of the ticket will get you a news story. It will also cost you the party machine, meaning agents, money and the endorsement in the stronghold wards. You can say where you disagree on local matters, in your own words, and leave it there.

Recruit people the ward trusts

In a hostile ward your campaign team is itself the argument. A church elder, a respected teacher, a market chairwoman and a boda-boda stage chairman standing with you say more than any poster. Our guide on what an MCA aspirant should have done by now covers building that core team.

Count station by station

Pick the polling stations where your own support is strongest and work to push turnout up there. In a ward of a dozen stations, a hundred extra votes in three friendly ones can outweigh a bad regional mood. An agent in every stream protects them.

The switch question

Voters and rivals will ask why you have not changed party. You may have good reasons to stay, whether it is your primary, your coalition or what you believe, and you should be able to give the answer in one sentence. If you do decide to switch, do it early and within the law. The Registrar must certify each party's membership list by 23 March 2027, and a late move can leave you on no party's register.

How far ward work can go

A strong local candidate can beat a regional tide, but only by so much. When the gap between your party's floor and a winning total is enormous, ward work will not close it, and a candidate has to weigh an independent run or a different party honestly and early. Our independent route guide sets out the costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an MCA candidate win if their presidential candidate is unpopular in the ward?

Yes, if the race is made about the ward. Voters get six separate ballots and often split them, so a strong local record can outweigh the national mood.

Should a candidate hide their party in an unfriendly ward?

No. The party symbol appears on the ballot. Lead with your own record and local issues, and answer questions about the party honestly and briefly.

When must party membership lists be submitted for 2027?

Under the IEBC's gazette notices of August 2026, the Registrar certifies each party's membership list by 23 March 2027 and the party submits it to the IEBC by 12 April. The names of primary candidates are due by 8 April. The IEBC's 20 August press release had given 16 March for both.
