Kithure Kindiki, the Running-Mate Question, and Mt Kenya East's 2032 IOU

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki put it about as plainly as a politician can in July 2026: "I will be President William Ruto's running mate in next year's general elections. Those who are salivating for that position should forget it because the Ruto-Kindiki ticket will be on the ballot, and we shall win."

Statements that categorical are usually made because the thing is not settled.

Why the slot is in play at all

Because of the ODM arrangement.

UDA and ODM have moved through 2026 toward formalising their partnership. Reporting on those talks says ODM's price includes the deputy president position. If that is accurate, the negotiation is not about whether Kindiki is competent. It is about what a bloc of Nyanza and Western votes is worth, priced in one office.

That is an uncomfortable position for any DP to be in, and Kenyan media has described Kindiki as under siege for exactly this reason.

The Mt Kenya East argument

Kindiki's base has organised. On 15 August 2026 the Mount Kenya East Councils of Elders resolved to back him unconditionally as Deputy President and in his future ambition to become the first President from Mount Kenya East.

Read that carefully. It is two commitments, not one: keep the DP slot in 2027, and get the top of the ticket in 2032.

Leaders from the eastern bloc have been pressing Mount Kenya West to back him — the argument being that the West has held the region's senior slots and it is the East's turn. That is a straightforwardly transactional case and it is being made openly.

The polling

Infotrak has Kindiki leading the running-mate field at 34 per cent, with the next contenders at 11 and 5. Within the question as asked, he is not close to being displaced by another Mount Kenya figure.

But that is the wrong contest. The threat is not another Mount Kenya name. It is a coalition deal that moves the slot out of Mount Kenya entirely.

The complication in the region

Mount Kenya is also where RiRigathi Gachagua DCP is strongest — the Ol Kalou by-election in July 2026 went to DCP by better than six to one. So the same region that is arguing about who represents it on the government ticket is also delivering the government's heaviest by-election defeats.

Both things are true. A region can be represented at the top of a ticket and be voting against that ticket locally. Kenyan politics has done this before.

What it means below the top of the ballot

If you are seeking a UDA ticket in Mount Kenya, the running-mate question is not a spectator sport. Two scenarios:

The slot stays. Your party's regional brand is anchored by a DP from the region and you campaign on that.

The slot moves as part of an ODM deal. Your party's regional brand takes a hit at exactly the moment DCP is telling voters the region has been used and discarded. That is a hard cycle to run in on a government ticket.

You cannot control which happens. What you can control is whether your support is personal enough to survive the second case — a ward operation you built, coordinators who work for you, agents you recruited. That is the hedge, and it takes eleven months to build, not eleven days.

Why the slot is worth this much fighting

Because of what Mount Kenya delivers numerically. It is among the largest voting blocs in the country, and a presidential ticket that loses it outright has to find the equivalent somewhere else — which in practice means Nyanza and Western, which is exactly what the ODM arrangement is about.

So the running-mate question is not ceremonial. It is a live argument about which of two large regions the ticket is built on, and both cannot have the slot.

What a change would signal

If the deputy president position moves as part of a coalition deal, three things follow immediately.

Mount Kenya loses its highest office, at a moment when DCP is already telling the region it has been used and discarded — a message that landed hard enough to produce a six-to-one by-election margin at Ol Kalou in July 2026.

Mount Kenya East loses the 2032 argument its elders spent August 2026 constructing, because the case rests on continuity through 2027.

Every UDA aspirant in the region campaigns without a regional anchor. That is survivable with a strong personal ward operation and very difficult without one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is William Ruto's running mate for 2027?

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has stated publicly that he will be on the 2027 ticket, and leads running-mate polling at around 34 per cent. However, reporting on the UDA–ODM talks says ODM has sought the deputy president position as part of the arrangement.

Why are Mount Kenya East elders backing Kindiki?

The Mount Kenya East Councils of Elders resolved on 15 August 2026 to back him unconditionally as Deputy President and in his ambition to become the first President from Mount Kenya East, arguing that the region's turn has come after Mount Kenya West held senior positions.
