Linda Mwananchi Went to Homa Bay, and Homa Bay Turned Out

The Linda Mwananchi movement took its rally programme into Homa Bay, and two things happened.

The crowds were large. And there were sustained attempts to disrupt the meetings, with chaos reported through the day.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna led it, alongside Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

Why the venue is the story

Homa Bay is ODM territory in the most complete sense — one of the counties where the party has historically produced enormous, near-unanimous margins.

Sifuna is a former ODM Secretary-General, removed by the party's own National Executive Committee, now touring the party's heartland with a movement organised around opposing everything the party's current leadership has agreed to.

That is a public test of a question nobody can otherwise answer: does the ODM base in 2027 follow the party structure, or the politics it believed the party stood for?

Large crowds suggest the answer is not settled, which is itself the finding.

The route so far

The movement built momentum in Western — Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia — before moving into Nyanza, with a Meru rally announced next.

Western, then Nyanza, then a Mount Kenya county. That is the geography of a national coalition being assembled by rally rather than by negotiation, and it is a deliberate sequence.

The disruption is data, not colour

A rally that draws crowds and disruption on the same day is telling you two separate things: that the mobilisation works, and that there is now a market response to mobilisation that works.

Kenya's human rights commission has been documenting political intolerance, intimidation and the alleged use of organised groups. The Interior Cabinet Secretary said in April that more than 104 criminal gangs were operating under political patronage. Researchers have documented a rate card.

None of that is specific to one rally. All of it is the environment the 2027 campaign will be conducted in.

What a movement still has to convert

A crowd is the easiest thing in politics to produce and the hardest to bank.

Three conversions stand between a Homa Bay crowd and a Homa Bay result: crowd to recorded supporter, supporter to completed task, and task to an agent sitting in a polling stream on 10 August 2027 with a Form 36A.

Movements that make those conversions become forces. Movements that keep holding rallies become memories, and Kenyan political history is full of both.

None of it is complicated. It is a list, a follow-up within 48 hours, a small first task, and somebody counting weekly — which across eight counties is impossible by hand and entirely ordinary with a system.

Related: what the movement is.

What a crowd in a heartland does and does not prove

Proves: that there is an audience for the argument, that the movement can organise an event in unfamiliar territory, and that local figures were willing to appear on the platform. All three are real and none is trivial.

Does not prove: that the county's votes have moved. A rally draws the people most willing to attend a rally, which in a county of hundreds of thousands of registered voters is a small and unrepresentative fraction.

The honest test is a ballot. Until one is held in the region, both readings remain available — that the base has shifted, or that a visible minority is louder than a quiet majority.

Which is exactly why the conversion work matters more than the crowd. A movement that leaves Homa Bay with several thousand recorded supporters, each contacted within 48 hours and given a task, has evidence. One that leaves with photographs has an argument.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened at the Linda Mwananchi Homa Bay rally?

The Sifuna-led movement held rallies in Homa Bay alongside Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, drawing large crowds amid heightened tension and sustained attempts to disrupt the meetings.

Why is a rally in Homa Bay significant?

Homa Bay is a core ODM county. A movement led by a removed ODM Secretary-General rallying there tests whether the party's base follows its current leadership or the opposition politics it previously represented.
