Voting for the First Time in 2027: Every Step Inside the Polling Station

The first time you vote, the queue is long, the room is busy, and everybody else looks like they have done this before. Most of them have not either.

Here is the sequence, in the order it happens, so that none of it is a surprise on 10 August 2027.

Before you leave the house

You must already be registered. Registration does not happen at the polling station on election day, so if you are not on the register by the time registration closes, there is nothing that can be done on the morning.

Carry the identification document you registered with. Not a photocopy of it, not a photograph of it on your phone. The document.

Know your polling station before you set out. Your station is fixed by where you registered, and it is not necessarily the nearest school to your house. Confirm it in advance rather than walking to the obvious building and finding you are in the wrong queue.

Leave the campaign clothing at home. A shirt with a candidate's face on it is campaigning, and campaigning at a polling station is a problem you do not need on your first attempt.

The queue and the door

Polling stations open early and close in the evening, and the rule that matters is that anybody already in the queue at closing time votes.

At the door there are streams. A large station is divided so that voters are handled in manageable groups, and your stream is determined by the register. Somebody will direct you. Ask if nobody does.

Priority in the queue exists for voters who need it, including older voters, expectant mothers, the sick and persons with disabilities. If that is you or somebody you have brought, say so rather than waiting to be noticed.

How KIEMS identifies you

Inside, a clerk uses the KIEMS kit, which is the Kenya Integrated Elections Management System, to confirm you are who you say you are, usually by fingerprint.

Agents from the parties and candidates are sitting there watching this. That is their job and it is normal. They are not there to talk to you.

If the kit cannot read your finger, do not walk away. There is a procedure for that situation, and the presiding officer is the person who applies it. Ask them directly, and stay until you have an answer.

Six ballot papers, six boxes

Kenya elects six offices at a general election: President, Governor, Senator, County Woman Representative, Member of the National Assembly, and Member of the County Assembly.

That means six papers, issued to you, each with its own box. They differ by colour so that they can be told apart quickly, and the clerks will point you to the right box for each one. If you are unsure which box takes which paper, ask before you post it rather than after.

You go behind the screen alone. Mark each paper for one candidate in that race, fold it, and put it in the correct box.

Two things to avoid. Do not mark a paper twice, because that is how a vote gets rejected. And leave the phone in your pocket, because photographing a marked ballot creates a problem for you and for the officials in the room.

Then your finger is marked with indelible ink, and you are done.

If something goes wrong

Your name is not in the register at that station. Tell the presiding officer. Confirming your correct station in advance is what prevents this, and it is the most common avoidable problem.

Somebody tells you how to vote inside the station. That is not their role. The presiding officer runs the station and is the person to tell.

You are turned away. Ask for the reason, and ask for it from the presiding officer rather than from whoever is standing at the door.

In every one of these situations the answer is the same: the presiding officer is the authority in that station, and you should not leave the room with an unanswered question.

What to do this month

Check that you are registered, and check which station you are assigned to. Do it now, in 2026, while a problem can still be fixed by an office rather than by an argument.

Then decide your six races before the day. A first-time voter who has thought about the ward seat and the county seat in advance spends two minutes behind the screen. One who is meeting the names for the first time on a folded paper is making six decisions in a hurry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I register to vote at the polling station on election day?

No. You must already be on the register before registration closes for that election. Turning up at a polling station without being registered cannot be fixed on the day, which is why checking your registration status early is the single most useful thing a first-time voter can do.

How many ballot papers will I get in a Kenyan general election?

Six, one for each office: President, Governor, Senator, County Woman Representative, Member of the National Assembly, and Member of the County Assembly. Each paper has its own ballot box and they are distinguished by colour, and the clerks will direct you to the right box for each one.

What happens if the KIEMS kit cannot read my fingerprint?

Do not leave the station. There is a procedure for identification when the biometric read fails, and the presiding officer is the officer who applies it. Ask them directly rather than accepting an answer at the door, and stay until the question has actually been resolved one way or the other.
