What to Bring to a Kenyan Voter Registration Desk

One document. That is the entire list.

To register as a voter in Kenya you present an original Kenyan national identity card or a valid Kenyan passport. There is no third option, and the reason is narrow. The registration officer is copying your particulars from a document the state itself issued, and only those two documents carry what the register needs.

The two documents that work

The national identity card is what almost everybody uses. It is the ordinary route, it is what the desk expects, and the identification number on it becomes the key to your register entry for as long as you are a voter.

A valid Kenyan passport does exactly the same job. It is not a second-class document at the registration desk and it is not a consolation prize for people who lost their card. It is a full alternative, and for Kenyans living outside the country it is usually the only practical one.

Related: registering on a passport.

Why it has to be the original

A photocopy proves that a photocopier existed. A photograph on a phone proves less than that.

The officer is verifying a physical document issued to the person standing in front of them, and the integrity of the whole register depends on that check happening once, properly, in person. So carry the card or the passport itself, not an image of it, and not a copy somebody stamped for you.

What does not count, however official it looks

A birth certificate is not an identification document for this purpose. It proves birth, not identity.

Neither is a driving licence, a student card, a work identity card, a KRA PIN certificate, a health insurance card, a bank card, a church membership card, or a letter from an administrator confirming that you are who you say you are. Some of those are useful documents. None of them registers a voter.

The acknowledgement slip issued while an identity card is being processed is a recurring question, and it is not one to settle from a blog post. The instruction on it can change. Ask the IEBC constituency office what the current position is before you spend a morning travelling.

If your identity card is lost, damaged or never collected

Three different problems, and the registration desk fixes none of them.

If the card is lost, you need a replacement from the office that issues identity cards. Start there, not at the IEBC.

If it is damaged past reading, the same. A card the officer cannot read is a card that cannot be copied into a register entry.

If you applied and never went back for it, the card may simply be sitting at the collection point waiting for you. This is more common than people assume, and it is the cheapest problem on this page to solve. Go and collect it.

Check three things before you leave the house

First, that you are carrying the document rather than a copy of it.

Second, if it is a passport, that it has not expired. An expired passport is not a valid passport, and the desk will treat it as such.

Third, that the name and identification number on the document are the ones you expect. If your identity document already carries an error, the register will inherit that error, and correcting it later is a separate errand in a separate office.

Why this matters, and what to do today

Every avoidable failure at a registration desk is a person who went home, intended to return, and did not. That is the whole mechanism by which turnout is lost, and it is lost long before anybody prints a ballot paper.

Kenya votes on 10 August 2027. Between now and then, the difference between a registered voter and an unregistered one is often a single wasted trip in 2026 that nobody ever repeated.

So find the document. Physically find it, do not remember where it is.

Look at the expiry date if it is a passport. Look at the spelling of your name either way.

If it is in order, the trip to the registration point is a short one and you should make it this week. If it is not, the identity document office is where your registration actually starts, and every week you delay that step is a week added to the end of the chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What documents do I need to register as a voter in Kenya?

An original Kenyan national identity card or a valid Kenyan passport. Only those two documents work, and the original is required rather than a copy or a photograph. The registration officer is verifying a physical state-issued document in person.

Can I register as a voter using a birth certificate?

No. A birth certificate proves birth, not identity, and it is not an identification document for voter registration. The same applies to driving licences, student cards, work identity cards and letters from administrators. Only the national identity card or the Kenyan passport will do.

What if I lost my national ID before registering?

Your first stop is the office that issues identity cards, not the IEBC. A registration officer cannot register you without a readable original document. If you applied for a card and never collected it, check the collection point first, because uncollected cards are a common and easily solved problem.
