Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), an MP since 2017, chaired the National Assembly's Budget and Appropriations Committee until March 2025. He left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in mid-2026 and announced on 17 August 2026 that he had joined the People's Party of Kenya (PPK) and the opposition. By 23 September 2026 he was leading PPK and had named its first officials. He says he would back whoever the opposition picks to face President William Ruto.

Early years

Nyoro was born in December 1985 in Murang'a, Wikipedia records. He was a student leader at Kenyatta University, where he took an economics degree in 2009, and went into business before politics, in stockbroking, telecoms and construction.

His first win, on the Jubilee Party ticket in 2017, came with 60,881 votes. In 2022 he held the seat on UDA with 68,256, according to Wikipedia.

The budget committee and the fallout

The budget committee chair, which Nyoro held after the 2022 election, is one of the most powerful posts in the House. He lost it in March 2025. Citizen Digital reported on 12 March 2025 that Samuel Atandi (Alego Usonga) had been elected in his place, as allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua lost committee posts.

Nyoro told reporters on 18 March 2025 that nobody had consulted him and that he did not know why he had been removed. In a House reshuffle on 29 July 2025 he was dropped from the committee altogether.

His own version came later. Citizen Digital reported on 2 September 2026 that he traced his fallout with Ruto to Gachagua's impeachment in October 2024, and that he denied claims he was a government mole inside the opposition. On 25 August 2026 he called Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah (Kikuyu) "jealous" and "conniving". Ichung'wah had challenged him in the House on 19 August to resign and seek a fresh mandate after leaving UDA.

Leaving UDA and taking over PPK

Nyoro told supporters on 5 July 2026 that he was no longer a UDA member. "The UDA party has abandoned Kenyans," he said, as The Star reported, and added that he would not be "pushed around" into choosing his next party. Six weeks later, on 17 August, he confirmed he had joined the People's Party of Kenya. According to the Eastleigh Voice, the party's roots go back to 2007.

In late August he toured Murang'a and Kiambu, opening PPK to aspirants. On 22 September 2026 he named the party's first designate officials, with 24-year-old Benny Hinn Walubengo as secretary general, The Star reported.

The Mt Kenya contest with DCP

PPK is fishing in the same pond as Gachagua's Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). The Star reported on 30 August that Gachagua opened a DCP office in Murang'a a day after PPK's launch there, and that DCP secretary general-designate John Methu (Senator, Nyandarua) warned against multiple opposition parties in the region.

Nyoro calls Gachagua an "elder brother" and has avoided attacking him directly. During Gachagua's US tour in September, though, the two traded accusations over an unnamed politician said to have been paid Sh200 million to form a party, the Nation reported. Neither claim was backed by evidence in the reports.

Then there is Fred Matiang'i, who took over the Jubilee Party leadership in September 2026. The two appeared together at a church service in Kangema, Murang'a, on 12 September 2026 and called for opposition unity. For the regional picture, see the Mt Kenya split.

Where he stands for 2027

On the presidency he has kept his options open. At a Murang'a rally reported by The Star on 30 August he said: "If it is Ndindi Nyoro who will be the opposition flag bearer, be sure I will send Ruto home. And if it is any other of the opposition leaders, I will support him or her."

PPK faces the same party deadlines as everyone else: nomination rules were due with the Registrar by 16 October 2026 and certification by 30 October. For the rules on switching parties as a sitting MP, see what party-hopping costs, and for the wider field, who is running for president.

Still unsettled on 23 September 2026 was whether PPK would join the united opposition as a separate party or fold into a larger arrangement with Matiang'i.
