County by county
The table gives the IEBC's official county results for the two leading candidates, as compiled in the Elections Observation Group (ELOG) results database. Percentages are each candidate's share of the valid votes cast for all four candidates in that county, calculated from ELOG's vote counts and rounded to two decimal places. The registered-voter column is the county's 2022 register.

The 47 county rows add up to 7,173,951 for Ruto and 6,939,203 for Odinga. The remaining 2,190 votes for Ruto and 3,727 for Odinga, which bring the totals to the declared national figures, were cast outside the county rows, mostly in the diaspora: Wikipedia's tabulation of the IEBC results gives Odinga 3,435 diaspora votes and Ruto 1,840. A word of caution for anyone copying tables from elsewhere: at least one widely shared county table for 2022 has candidate figures that do not add up to its own valid-vote column. Adding the rows up is the quickest check.
Who won where
Ruto carried Mount Kenya and most of the Rift Valley. His best counties by share were Elgeyo-Marakwet (96.86 per cent), Kericho (95.32) and Bomet (95.27). Nandi, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri and Murang'a all gave him more than 80 per cent. In raw votes his biggest counties were Kiambu (606,429), Nairobi (561,775) and Nakuru (455,864).
Odinga swept Nyanza, most of Western, the Coast, Ukambani and North Eastern. Homa Bay gave him 98.93 per cent, Siaya 98.60 and Kisumu 97.45. Nairobi was his biggest single county, with 767,395 votes, and he also won Kakamega, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni and Kilifi by wide margins.
Bungoma was the exception in Western, going to Ruto with 63.16 per cent. In the north of the Rift Valley, Samburu and Turkana went the other way, to Odinga.

The 25 per cent rule
To win outright, a candidate needs more than half the national vote and at least 25 per cent in 24 of the 47 counties. On the county figures above, Ruto crossed 25 per cent in 39 counties and Odinga in 34, so both cleared the county test easily and the result turned on the national majority. How the rule works is explained in the 24-county rule.
Ruto fell below 25 per cent in Mandera, Makueni, Machakos, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Migori. Odinga fell below it in Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Baringo, Kericho and Bomet.
Turnout
Turnout was lowest at the Coast. Mombasa recorded 43.76 per cent and Kilifi 49.03, on ELOG's figures, against 64.77 per cent nationally. The Rift Valley counties that voted most heavily for Ruto were also among the highest in turnout, with Bomet, West Pokot and Kericho all close to 80 per cent.
After the declaration
Wafula Chebukati, then chairman of the IEBC, announced the result at the Bomas of Kenya on 15 August 2022. Earlier the same day four commissioners, led by vice-chair Juliana Cherera, said they could not "take ownership" of the results. Odinga filed a petition on 22 August, and on 5 September the Supreme Court dismissed the challenge and upheld Ruto's win. He was sworn in on 13 September 2022. How the numbers moved from polling stations to the national declaration is set out in Form 34A to Form 34C, and the longer history in Kenya's presidents since independence.
Odinga died on 15 October 2025. The next presidential election is on 10 August 2027.
