November, Christmas or March: When the Opposition Might Name Its Candidate
As of 23 September 2026 Kenya's opposition had four competing answers on when to name its presidential candidate. Kalonzo Musyoka's camp wanted it done by 10 October. Enoch Wambua (Senator, Kitui) of Wiper argued for November. Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President, said the time was not right and pointed to after Christmas. James Orengo (Governor, Siaya) said March or April 2027. The law does not force the question until May 2027.
The four timelines
| Camp | When | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Kalonzo's wing | by 10 October 2026 | The Star, 23 September |
| Enoch Wambua, Wiper | by November 2026 | The Star, 21 September |
| Rigathi Gachagua, DCP | serious talks after Christmas | The Star, 21 September |
| James Orengo | March or April 2027 | broadcast interview, 6 September |
Babu Owino (Embakasi East) is with the early camp. "The best time for these people to unite is now," The Star quoted him on 21 September. Waiting until December, he warned, would split the opposition further.
The case for going early
Wambua's argument, as The Star reported it, is about momentum. With a named candidate the opposition can build a campaign structure, settle the running-mate question and start dividing seats among partner parties. He also said young people registering to vote should know who the opposition's candidate is.
Kalonzo's camp went further and put a plan on the table: Kalonzo as candidate, Edwin Sifuna (Senator, Nairobi) as running mate, and the Prime Cabinet Secretary post offered to Gachagua, The Star reported on 23 September. We covered it in Kalonzo's 10 October target.
The case for waiting
Gachagua worries about exposure. The Star reported that he believes naming a candidate early gives President William Ruto time to weaken the opposition. His reply to Owino was short: "I told Babu, I have been around for long and I know how to do these things."
Orengo reached for history. He cited "Kibaki Tosha", the October 2002 declaration in which Raila Odinga backed Mwai Kibaki about two months before the December 2002 election that Kibaki won. His reading is that a late endorsement everyone accepts can do more than a long public contest.
There is a practical reason to wait as well, though neither camp says it outright. The polls do not yet show a clear leader among the opposition figures, as we found in what the 2026 polls suggest about a Kalonzo-Sifuna ticket.
What the law requires, and when
None of the September 2026 dates is legally binding. The real deadlines, from the IEBC's Gazette Notice No. 13497 and the Registrar's timelines of 6 September, fall in 2027:
- 23 March 2027: the Registrar must have certified each party's membership list.
- 8 April 2027: parties give the IEBC the names of their primary aspirants, with the dates and venues of the primaries.
- 12 April 2027: certified membership lists go to the IEBC.
- April and May 2027: coalition agreements are due with the Registrar.
- 8 May 2027: party primaries and internal disputes must be concluded.
- 24 May 2027: presidential aspirants submit lists of at least 2,000 supporting registered voters.
- 29 May to 11 June 2027: presidential nominations at the IEBC. The campaign period opens on 29 May.
That puts Orengo's March-April window close to the last practical moment. A coalition that names its candidate after filing its coalition agreement has to write the selection method into that agreement first. Our 2027 election calendar lists every date, and the presidential aspirants' deadlines covers the ones specific to a presidential run.
The record so far
The opposition has already missed one target of its own. It said in 2025 that it would name its candidate in the first quarter of 2026, as we noted in the March promise. On 24 August 2026 the principals signed a unity pact committing to choose jointly, The Star reported, without fixing a date or a method. The argument over method is in poll or negotiation.
What to watch
- Whether anything came of the 10 October target. When we wrote this on 23 September, no other camp had endorsed it.
- Gachagua's position once he is back from the United States, where his tour ran to 9 October.
- Whether Wiper puts a November date in writing, and whether Sifuna's camp, which promised to unveil a party around 3 October, signs up to any date at all.
